Electrical storm

Car being driven through lightening storm

A car is not an ideal place to be during a lightning storm, but it's better than being in a tent, under a tree, or in a partly open shelter. Its metal frame offers some protection and could direct the electric current around the passenger compartment and eventually to the ground.

  • Don't drive the car during the storm. But stay inside it unless there's a building nearby.
  • Keep your hands in your lap and away from metal parts such as door handles or electronics such as the radio. A lightning strike can take various paths through the vehicle, going through electrical wires, the frame, or even the steering wheel.
  • Wait for the storm to pass before continuing on your drive.
