H1N1: Swine flu 101

Last reviewed: December 2009

When we asked Americans in late summer about worries for the next 12 months, "a major swine flu outbreak" topped the list overall. But in a follow-up poll only 34 percent of respondents said they'd definitely get a swine flu vaccination when it's available—and vaccination is one important step for prevention. Others:

  • Wash hands with soap and water often—including after handling money. (Some evidence suggests a virus can survive for three days on paper money.) You don't need antibacterial soap. Lather between fingers and scrub under nails for 20 seconds (sing "Happy Birthday" twice). Dry with paper towel. If you use a hand sanitizer, it should contain at least 60 percent alcohol.
  • Use disinfectant wipes on phones and computer keyboards.
  • A mask might make sense for those with flu or their caregivers. Look for "N95," indicating masks that meet government-approved standards.
  • If you have a cough and fever, stay home.
