

Whatever your own crystal ball or tea leaves reveal about the recession, chances are you plan to spend more carefully once it ends. When we asked a nationally representative sample of Americans 18 and older what they might splurge on after the recession, 15 percent said "nothing." (Only one option was more popular: vacation, at 17 percent.) Asked what they would do with a windfall of $10,000, two-thirds of respondents said they'd pay off debts or invest it.
