To make it easier and faster for consumers to compare prescription drug prices, Consumer Reports Health now offers a free online drug price comparison service.

The Compare Prices service provides trusted, unbiased drug price information from a variety of online pharmacies and other retailers. The service makes it easier for consumers to compare prescription drug prices objectively, so they can make more informed drug purchasing decisions.

The Compare Prices service is provided to Consumer Reports Consumer Reports Health visitors by special arrangement with DestinationRx, an established comparison-shopping Web site. The DestinationRx environment has been customized for Consumer Reports Consumer Reports Health visitors.

DestinationRx does not necessarily provide the lowest price for all drugs because it maintains relationships with only certain pharmacies. Consumer Reports Consumer Reports Health encourages you to check other online pharmacies to ensure that DestinationRx has quoted you a competitive price.  Once you enter a drug name and quantity in the DestinationRx page provided by Compare Prices, a Perspectives column on the right side of the page shows links to other sites to make it easier for you to compare prices with other online pharmacies.

To begin using Compare Prices, follow these simple steps:

  1. From the A-Z Index below, choose the first letter and then the full name of the drug you are researching. (Both generic and brand-name drugs are provided.)
  2. You will land on that drug’s main Review page, which provides free, unbiased drug safety and usage information.
  3. If Compare Prices is available for that drug, the Compare Prices symbol () will appear in the menu at the left side of the page.
  4. Click on the name of the drug you are researching in the left menu and continue to the DestinationRx Web site.  You will then:
  5. SELECT: Verify the name, package, and quantity of the drug you are researching, and click Submit.
  6. COMPARE: View and compare online pharmacy prices for your drug--the lowest price is listed first.  To see pricing for local retail pharmacy locations, enter your ZIP code.  For both online and retail pharmacies, all prices listed are for prescription drugs purchased without the benefit of insurance coverage.  If you plan to purchase a prescription drug from any of the pharmacies listed, you will need to have a valid, up-to-date prescription from a physician.
  7. SHOP: To place an order, click on the Proceed button and follow the instructions that are provided.  For local retail pharmacies, you will need to provide your name and telephone number to DestinationRx.  This information, along with the DestinationRx group number and identification number, will allow the pharmacy to charge the correct price and will ensure that you enjoy the full program discounts for your prescription.
