Burning traditions: How to prevent fires from holiday candles
Candle

The increasing popularity of candles in home décor has led to a sharp rise in the number of home fires.

If candles are part of your holiday celebrations, take these precautions: Place candles upright in a stable holder on a heat- resistant surface such as glass or ceramic tile. Even a tiny tea light can melt through plastic. Votive or scented candles require a solid metal or glass holder, since they liquefy to release fragrance. Set candles at least 4 inches apart and at least 3 feet below anything above them. Don’t leave candles unattended, and make sure they’re completely out before going to bed for the night.
