High blood pressure: The numbers

High blood pressure is a systolic (heart pumping) pressure of 140 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) or greater or a diastolic (between heartbeats) pressure of 90 mm Hg or greater on at least two occasions.

High blood pressure
31.3 percent of U.S. adults who have high blood pressure.
70 percent of those with high blood pressure and who took medication had their high blood pressure controlled.
22.4 percent don't know they have it.
