Finding a program

If you’re interested in trying mindfulness meditation, the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness provides free referrals to programs in the U.S. and abroad.

For other programs, start by asking your employer’s human resource department. Or talk with your physician or a cardiology department or cancer center. You could also call the counseling center at a local university, or look for a university in your area that has a center for integrative or mind-body medicine.

Consider asking what instructional materials the teacher uses and what research backs them up. Look for an instructor with at least a master’s degree. For meditation-based programs, look for an instructor with at least several years of experience. And try to contact some of the teacher’s students.
