If you’re motivated to learn meditation but aren’t comfortable with a group program, you can teach yourself with the help of a book or audiotapes, including those sold through university stress-reduction programs. Beware of any book or tape that insists that a certain style of meditation is superior. Research indicates that all forms of meditation can produce positive results.

Individual stress-management consultations or programs are offered by some hospitals and medical schools. Another option is to work one-on-one with a therapist, who can help you learn to reduce stress through cognitive methods or various relaxation techniques. Your insurance company may have a list of providers who are covered under your plan. Ask prospective therapists if they use stress-reduction strategies. You can also get referrals through the American Psychological Association, the National Association of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapists, or other professional groups.
