If you have five or more of the following symptoms that last for three weeks or longer, you may be suffering from major depression
- Feelings of unhappiness, hopelessness, pessimism
- Feelings of low self-esteem, worthlessness, guilt
- Loss of interest in hobbies, work, and other activities you usually enjoy, including sex
- Decreased energy, fatigue, feeling “slowed down”
- Insomnia, early morning awakening, or oversleeping
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
- Appetite changes—eating significantly less or more
- Irritability, restlessness, hostility
- Feeling anxious, stressed
- Recurring thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts
- Unexplained physical symptoms—such as headache, chronic indigestion, or pain—that do not respond to treatment
