Genesis Recalls Cars and SUVs for Fire Risk, Warns Owners to Park Outside

The Hyundai-owned brand is the latest to have a fire-related recall

Genesis is recalling over 90,000 vehicles including 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis sedans, 2017-2019 Genesis G80 and G90 sedans, and 2019 Genesis G70 SUVs because they may catch fire while parked or while driving. The automaker says that owners should park these vehicles outside and away from structures until a free recall repair has been completed.

The problem is caused if the car is driven on a flooded road or in abnormally wet conditions and water gets into the vehicle’s starter solenoid, which is part of the ignition system. If this happens, an electrical short can cause a fire in the engine compartment. Drivers may notice smoke coming from the engine compartment, a burning or melting odor, and/or difficulty starting the engine.

    MORE ON RECALLS

To fix these issues, Genesis and Hyundai dealerships will install a remedy that prevents water from getting into the solenoid. As with all recall repairs, the fix will be free of charge.

In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the automaker says it is aware of 12 cases in the U.S. where the starter solenoid experienced a “thermal incident,” and that there have been no crashes or injuries related to this recall.

It’s the latest fire-related recall involving vehicles from Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis, all of which share a corporate parent: Genesis is Hyundai’s luxury brand, Hyundai is the largest shareholder in Kia Motors, and all three brands share some parts and designs.

    Genesis Fire Recall Details

    Vehicles Recalled
    • Hyundai Genesis sedans manufactured between Feb. 21, 2014, and Feb. 24, 2016

    • Genesis G80 sedans manufactured between March 17, 2016, and Jan. 4, 2019

    • Genesis G90 sedans manufactured between June 13, 2016, and Jan. 22, 2019

    • Genesis GV70 SUVs manufactured between May 2, 2018, and Jan. 26, 2019

The problem: Water could leak into the starter solenoid and cause a short circuit, which could lead to an engine compartment fire. Owners can still drive the cars, but should park them outside and away from structures.

The fix: Genesis and Hyundai dealerships will install a kit that prevents water intrusion, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Hyundai at 855-371-9460.

NHTSA campaign number: 24V107. Hyundai’s own numbers for this recall are 254(H) and 018G(G).

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
