The EV9 is the first all-electric three-row SUV from a mainstream automaker. It has seating for six or seven, and is about the same size as Kia's Telluride SUV. The rear-drive, single-motor version has an EPA-estimated range of 305 miles. The more powerful AWD version we tested got 285 miles from its large 99.8-kWh battery in CR's 70-mph highway range test. It benefits from relatively quick charging at public DC fast chargers thanks to a 210-kW max acceptance rate. The EV9 is quick and quiet, with a mostly comfortable ride.
It feels a bit ponderous through corners, partly due to its vague steering. The interior is roomy, including an adult-habitable third-row seat. Some of the controls are unconventional, such as the twist-action gear selector and dashboard-embedded infotainment shortcut buttons. Some of the climate information can be difficult for the driver to read at a glance because it's hidden behind the steering wheel rim.

The Kia EV9 lands in the heart of the popular mid-sized three-row SUV as the first fully electric family hauler offered by a mainstream brand. The six- or seven-seater is based on the E-GMP platform used for other Genesis, Hyundai, and Kia electric vehicles, and it's about the same size as the Telluride SUV. Single-motor with 215-hp rear-wheel drive or 379-hp, dual-motor all-wheel drive are offered. The 99.8 kWh battery provides an estimated EPA range of 305 miles for the long range rear-wheel drive, and 283 miles for the all-wheel drive. Both AC and DC-fast charging are relatively quick. The EV9 is quick and quiet.
The ride is a bit firm but comfortable and handling is responsive but not sporty. Some controls are unusual but are easy enough to get used to. All versions come standard with a full suite of advanced safety and driver assist features including a lane change assist when using the adaptive cruise control.
