2023 Model Redesign Year
The CX-50 feels underpowered with the base 187-hp four-cylinder engine, and the six-speed automatic delivers some bumpy shifts. It also returned a disappointing 24 mpg overall in our tests. The uplevel turbo engine is more enjoyable, thanks to its extra oomph. The available hybrid version, employing a Toyota powertrain, returned an excellent 37 mpg overall. Forget the off-road marketing hype, the CX-50's agile on-road handling gives it a sporty feel through corners. The ride is well controlled but stiff on the 20-inch wheels of our tested Premium trim.
The hybrid version rides more comfortably and has more power than the standard engine. The front seats are comfortable, and the rear is roomy, with easy access because of its wide-opening doors. The unintuitive infotainment system's rotary control takes some getting used to, but even then, it's tedious.

2023 Model Redesign Year
Based on a platform shared with the CX-30, the CX-50 has standard all-wheel drive and more cargo space than the CX-5. The base 187-hp four-cylinder engine doesn't accelerate with much alacrity, and the old-school six-speed automatic delivers some bumpy shifts. The up-level turbo engine is more enjoyable thanks to its extra oomph. Agile handling is possibly the CX-50's best trait, which gives it a sporty feel. The ride is far too firm on the 20-inch wheels of our tested Premium Plus trim, but well controlled. The front seats are comfortable and the rear is roomy with easy access thanks to wide-opening doors.
The artfully designed cabin has a sleek, uncluttered look, but using the infotainment system's center-console controller knob takes some getting used to. Standard active safety and driver assist systems include FCW, AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection, BSW, RCTW, LDW, and LKA. A hybrid version was introduced for 2025, employing a Toyota powertrain. Improvements were also made to the standard driver assistance and safety package which now includes rear seat alert, vehicle exit warning, and nighttime pedestrian detection.
