    Mazda CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid

    Latest Model

    2024 Model Redesign Year
In addition to the potent inline-six turbocharged engine, the new three-row Mazda CX-90 also offers a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV.) As with the other CX-90s, all-wheel drive comes standard. The PHEV employs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a 17.8-kWh battery with electric drive. It has an EPA-estimated 25 miles of electric driving range, after which it transitions to regular hybrid operation where it got 23 mpg overall in our testing, 1-mpg less than the regular CX-90. The transitions from electric to gas power aren't the smoothest, however. Handling is taut and agile and the ride is firm and composed. But all versions above the base Preferred trim come with 21-inch tires that make the ride too stiff.
The cabin is roomy but many of the controls aren't that intuitive. The front seats are supportive and the driving position is well sorted. Both seven- and eight-passenger seating configurations are available. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became standard on the CX-90 PHEV for 2025.

    2024-Present

    2024 Model Redesign Year
In addition to the potent straight-six turbo engine, the new three-row Mazda CX-90 also offers a plug-in hybrid version, much like some European SUVs and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. All-wheel drive is standard. The plug-in hybrid employs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, a 17.8 kWh battery and an electric drive that give it an EPA EV range of 26 miles. After that, it transitions to regular hybrid operation and gets an estimated fuel economy of 25 mpg combined. Note that our regular CX-90 with the turbo six engine got 24 mpg overall. The transition from gas to electric power and vice versa is not the smoothest, however.
Handling is taut and agile, the ride is firm and composed, but unless you get the base Preferred trim, all other versions come with 21-inch wheels and tires that make the ride too stiff. The cabin is roomy but controls are not all that intuitive. The front seats are supportive and the driving position is well sorted. Both seven- and eight-passenger seating configurations are available. A comprehensive suite of active safety features is standard, including ACC for 2025 models.
